Edexcel A Level Physics tutor

Edexcel A Level Physics tutor

Specialist one-to-one online tuition for both Edexcel specifications

I provide specialist one-to-one online tuition for Pearson Edexcel A Level Physics, including both the UK A Level specification (9PH0) and Pearson Edexcel International A Level Physics (IAL).

I work with students at British and international schools in the UK and around the world.

Why parents choose to work with me

  • Experienced senior A Level Physics examiner
  • Graduate of Oxford and Durham universities
  • UK-qualified physics teacher
  • More than 25 years’ teaching and tutoring experience
  • Specialist in one-to-one A Level Physics tuition

Students work directly with me. There is no agency, no rotating team of tutors and no standard programme.

Each tutorial is tailored to the individual student and to the specific demands of the Edexcel course they are taking.

Some students need help overcoming particular difficulties. Others are already achieving strongly and want to push further.

In both cases, the aim is to develop deeper understanding, stronger problem-solving and more effective examination technique.

Which Edexcel A Level Physics course does my child take?

Pearson offers two different A Level Physics qualifications: Edexcel A Level Physics (9PH0) and Edexcel International A Level Physics (IAL).

The 9PH0 qualification is linear, with examinations taken at the end of the course. Edexcel IAL is modular, with six separately examined units.

International schools do not all make the same choice. Some use 9PH0, while others follow Edexcel IAL.

If you are unsure which course your child is taking, this is usually easy to establish from the school information, specification or examination papers. I can also help identify the correct course before tuition begins.

Specialist support for both Edexcel A Level Physics specifications

Pearson Edexcel A Level Physics (9PH0)

Edexcel A Level Physics (9PH0) is assessed through three written examination papers:

  • Paper 1: Advanced Physics I
  • Paper 2: Advanced Physics II
  • Paper 3: General and Practical Principles in Physics

The course also includes a separately reported Science Practical Endorsement.

Tuition can focus on particular areas of the specification, preparation for individual papers, practical understanding, mathematical skills or the synoptic demands of Paper 3.

Pearson Edexcel International A Level Physics (IAL)

Edexcel International A Level Physics has a modular structure consisting of six externally examined units:

  • Unit 1: Mechanics and Materials
  • Unit 2: Waves and Electricity
  • Unit 3: Practical Skills in Physics I
  • Unit 4: Further Mechanics, Fields and Particles
  • Unit 5: Thermodynamics, Radiation, Oscillations and Cosmology
  • Unit 6: Practical Skills in Physics II

Tuition can focus closely on the unit a student is currently studying or preparing to sit. At the same time, we can revisit earlier material where it underpins more advanced topics.

This is particularly useful in physics. Difficulties with mechanics, electricity or mathematical techniques often reappear later in the course if the underlying ideas were never completely secure.

Understanding the physics, not just learning answers

Strong examination performance requires much more than remembering definitions and practising familiar calculations.

Students must apply their knowledge in unfamiliar situations. They need to decide which physics is relevant, use mathematics confidently and communicate their reasoning clearly.

They must also interpret graphs and experimental data, evaluate methods and understand the practical physics assessed within their particular Edexcel course.

In individual tuition, we can look closely at why marks are being lost.

Sometimes the problem is conceptual. Sometimes it is mathematical. Sometimes a student understands the physics but does not express that understanding effectively in an examination answer.

Identifying the real difficulty allows our work to become much more focused.

Tuition informed by senior examining experience

Alongside my work as a full-time professional tutor, I am an active and experienced senior examiner for A Level Physics with a major examination board.

This gives me a detailed understanding of how examination questions are constructed, how mark schemes are applied and how students’ written responses are judged.

I do not teach tricks or encourage students simply to memorise mark-scheme phrases. Good exam technique begins with good physics.

Instead, I help students recognise what a question is asking, identify the important physics and structure their answers effectively.

The objective is simple: their written answers should communicate their understanding clearly enough for the examiner to reward it.

Support for students at different levels

Not every student needs the same kind of tuition.

Some understand lessons at school but struggle when examination questions look unfamiliar. Others have gaps in their understanding or have lost confidence after disappointing results.

High-achieving students often need something different. They may already be working at A or A* level but want greater challenge, more individual attention or help becoming consistently accurate on demanding questions.

I therefore start with the student rather than with a fixed tuition programme.

We identify what is limiting their performance and concentrate our time where it can be most useful.

For students at British and international schools

I work with Edexcel A Level Physics students in the UK and internationally, including students at British and international schools across Hong Kong, the Middle East and Asia.

I have supported students at leading international schools, including Harrow International School Hong Kong.

“He has not only helped improve my A Level grade, but also significantly built my confidence in tackling challenging problems.”

— Student, Harrow International School Hong Kong

Online tuition can work especially well for international students because of the time difference.

After-school sessions in Hong Kong and other parts of Asia often fall within the UK working day. Students in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and elsewhere in the Gulf can usually be accommodated during their late afternoon or evening.

This can make regular specialist tuition easier to fit around a demanding international-school timetable.

How my online Edexcel A Level Physics tuition works

1. Free introductory meeting

We begin with an informal online meeting. This gives us an opportunity to discuss the student’s course, current performance, ambitions and any particular difficulties.

It also allows the student and parent to meet me before deciding whether to proceed.

2. Individual tuition

I identify the areas where support is likely to make the greatest difference.

This might involve a particular topic, paper or IAL unit, conceptual understanding, mathematical skills, practical questions or examination technique.

3. Live one-to-one tutorials

Tutorials take place online using Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet.

We use screen sharing, a virtual whiteboard, examination questions and other carefully selected resources. Students are actively involved throughout rather than simply watching a presentation.

4. Continuity between lessons

I maintain a shared record of our tutorials, including worked examples and annotated solutions.

Students can return to previous explanations and review the work we have completed together.

Frequently asked questions

Do you teach both Edexcel A Level Physics (9PH0) and Edexcel International A Level Physics?

Yes. Tuition can be tailored directly to either specification and to the particular topics, papers or units a student is studying.

How can I tell which Edexcel course my child is taking?

The standard Edexcel A Level Physics qualification uses the specification code 9PH0. The International A Level is usually referred to as Edexcel IAL and is organised into six units.

If you are unsure, I can normally identify the course very quickly from a school document, examination paper or textbook.

Can you help with practical skills?

Yes. Tuition can cover experimental methods, graphs, data analysis, uncertainties, evaluation and the practical understanding assessed in written examinations.

For students following 9PH0, the Science Practical Endorsement itself is assessed by the student’s school or examination centre; I do not award the endorsement.

Can tuition focus on one particular paper or IAL unit?

Yes. We can concentrate on an upcoming paper or unit while revisiting earlier physics wherever necessary.

Can you help a student who is already achieving an A?

Yes. Strong students often benefit from more demanding problem-solving, unfamiliar applications and detailed feedback on the small weaknesses that still cost marks.

Do you only teach students in the UK?

No. A significant part of my work is with students attending British and international schools overseas.

Can you guarantee an A or A*?

No responsible tutor can guarantee an examination result.

What I can provide is experienced, individual tuition designed to strengthen the knowledge, understanding and examination skills that allow a student to perform as well as they can.
